Grow Herbs

The word “organic” normally conjures up ideas of something that is purer and more wholesome. When an item, such as a food is marked as “organic” it means that the ingredients in that food were grown without the use of pesticides, not genetically modified, and was not grown using synthetic fertilizers.

Organic can also be used in reference to animal products too like in eggs, poultry and other meat. It means the animals were brought up with no antibiotics or growth hormones. This means this product is actually purer and more wholesome than traditionally-grown or traditionally-raised products.

Purchasing Organic Groceries

Purchasing organic groceries is not without problems though. Organic is in vogue today, this means that most things sold as organic can be priced double opposed to things that aren’t. Are these items worth it then? This is dependent upon the person you ask this of as to what answers you will get. The basic fact is, that when you taste organic food and sample food that is not, you will notice the taste difference.

Parents like to buy just the organic foods to cook for their family, since they believe it is healthier for them to consume. Not all parents have an easy time buying organics for their families due to financial difficulties. Some people think you have to go only to health-food stores to buy organic foods, but you don’t the grocery store carries them too. The organics at a traditional-grocery store are much lower in price than they are at the health-food store.

The organic foods can also be found directly from the farmers at the farmer’s market near you, and will cost less this way too for your vegetables and fruits. When you have the yard space at your house you can grow your own organic fruits and vegetables.

Cooking Organically.

Organic cooking is truly no different from cooking with non-organic foods. You do not need any special cookware to cook organic foods, and you can use the same recipes you always have but with organic foods instead. You will be amazed at how much more tastier the dishes are when they are cooked using organic foods.

Spices need to be Organic Too.

Don’t forget the spices! Many people purchase meats and other organic foods and forget the spices also should be organic. There truly is a difference in the taste of organic spices over regular spices.

Final Thoughts.

Many people add organic foods to their groceries and begin changing over to all organic foods slowly. There is a difference in the taste of food that is organic compared to non-organic foods. This is why many people change complete to an organic diet.

In this video, Betty purchases herbs for planting outside, and then plants them in her herb garden. A few of our herbs that were planted last year survived the winter, so Rick and I had chives, tarragon, thyme, sage, and a few ornamental plants to start with. We went to Lowe’s in Richmond and purchased curly parsley, flat parsley, oregano, basil, mint, rosemary, dill, cilantro, onion chives, a couple of tomato plants, a green bell pepper plant, a red bell pepper plant, and 2 hot pepper plants. We planted the herbs and vegetables on April 21 (two weeks ago), and they have been growing nicely since then. We did lose the two hot pepper plants very quickly to rabbits, so we may replace those, but they will have to be protected from the rabbits! We reorganized the ornamental plants a bit, moving a hosta plant to an empty spot in front of our azaleas in our landscaping around the house. I will be uploading a recipe using some of the herbs from our herb garden soon! I hope this video is helpful to you, if you are planning an herb garden.
