More and more people are using herbs in their cooking. As people watch more and more cookery shows on the various tv channels, they realise that they, too, can cook like a famous chef.
Using fresh herbs is much favoured over resorting to dried, store-bought herbs. This often means growing your own so that you have exactly what you need at hand any time you need it. Although herbs can grow in most places because they are hardy plants, many people like to make them look attractive by designing a special herb garden.
There are many designs that can be used, and it really comes down to the amount of space you have and the style you prefer. For instance, if you have very little space, you may like the idea of designing a herb garden in a wheelbarrow. This will actually hold quite a few plants, and it can be nice to have it portable. You can place where you want it for the aesthetics of looking good, but you can also move it to shelter or protection if the weather gets bad. However, I do like to use my wheelbarrow, so only a good idea if you have an old one perhaps!
Other options for the small herb garden might include a sun dial, a garden statue, or even a bird bath, which can be beautified by planting the herbs around the base with a brick pathway, or stepping stones leading to the actual centrepiece. You might decide to use a small gazebo as a garden. Depending on the types of plants you want to have growing, you may want to incorporate fence posts or a lamp post or wall to accommodate climbing vines for instance.
When designing a herb garden, you could edge a path or walkway with your herbs. You could even line up pots of herbs along the path if you don’t have much garden space along the walkway. Another practical option is to use a large wooden tub and place it near the kitchen door.
If you use it for herbs such as parsley, chives, basil, and thyme, you will have the herbs you need for your recipes at your fingertips.
Some people like to incorporate a vegetable garden as well when designing a herb garden. This is a great idea as long as you do some research on how well the vegetables and herbs get along – there are some that are compatible and some that are not. You don’t want your vegetables and herbs fighting, so be sure to check that out. Raised beds are a great idea for planting and managing a vegetable patch.
You can have a herb garden no matter how much or how little space you have available, and you can make it attractive as well as useful.
Designing your own home herb garden can be easy and rewarding.
