There are a huge variety of herb garden plants to choose from, and each one is unique in its own way. If you are interested in specific types of herb garden plants, you should research them to understand the care needed for each plant. This article will get you started in understanding general different types of herbs and what they are used for.

From a growing perspective, there are of course 3 main categories of plant – Annuals, Biennial and Perennial.

Annual Herbs – such as basil, cilantro, and summer savory – will not survive the winter frost. Each year they must be planted from seed, or from a small plant you have kept indoors from the summer growth. .

Biennial Herbs form leaves in their first growing season, and flowers and seed in the second season; then they die. Biennial herbs – such as parsley, angelica, or caraway – should be sown in late spring, directly into the garden. Prepare the soil first by working it to a fine texture and dampen the soil slightly. Plant the seeds in shallow rows, then firm the soil on top of them. Fine seeds can be planted in a mixture of sand, which will allow them to spread more evenly. You can also cover the herb bed with wet burlap or paper in order to keep the soil moist during germination.

Perennial Herbs – such as sage and winter savory – can and do survive cold temperatures, and with tending, will grow year after year.

Herbs are often grouped into the categories for which they are used.

Culinary Herbs are probably the most useful to herb gardeners. They have a huge range of different uses in cooking. Because of their strong flavors, herbs like chives, thyme, basil, sage, savory, and marjoram are generally used in small quantities to add flavor to different types of food. Parsley is an extremely popular herb that is used mostly as a garnish. Some herbs can act as natural sweeteners – stevia, licorice, and the exotically named aztec sweet herb.

Aromatic Herbs have pleasant smelling flowers or foliage. Oils from aromatic herbs like loyage, mint, and rosemary can be used to make different types of perfumes, toilet water, or other various scents. Parts of aromatic herb plants used intact can also be used in the home to scent linens or clothing. They can also be dried and made into potpourri which will enable them to be able to retain their aroma for a long period of time. Lavender and lemon verbena are great herbs to use for potpourri.

Some herbs are also used for medicinal purposes. For centuries herbs have been thought to have the ability to cure the body. Present medical knowledge recognizes that some herbs are beneficial to one’s health, others are overrated. Herbs used for medicinal purposes should be used carefully. Some herbs are harmless but others can be dangerous if eaten. Herbs are used to alleviate stress, pain, or to boosting the immune system and cure insomnia – herb Robert, and lemon balm I have found that Aloe vera is great to have around the house (usually potted) for any accidental burns and cuts (more healing than anything you will find over the counter.

A final category are herbs that are used mainly as decoration, because they grow beautiful brightly colored flowers and foliage. Many have whitish flowering, some have various light colored flowers – like valerian – which has crimson blossoms, and borage and chicory, which grow gorgeous blue flowers.

Not all herbs fit neatly into one of the above categories, and indeed serve many purposes. For example, mint may be used for cooking, tea, and pest control – but make sure you border its growth, or it will become a pest itself growing wild across your garden!

Whatever the interest that you may have in herbs, by understanding the facets of herb garden plants you are able to pick the herbs that will be most useful to you.

Long time gardeners realize how useful worms are. In fact, garden worms areone of nature’s best recycling tools. As such they have become quite popular with people who create home composting projects. Once composting begins, the worms do most of the work ensuring that this type of composting is really easy .

If you want to let composting work for you , you should be sure to first ensure you have obtained the right species of worms to tackle the job . The right worms are the kind which will consume the most and be able to survive in the moist, warm environment in which they are expected to reside . Eisenia foetida, known commonly as the red wiggler, is likely the best critter for success .

The red wiggler will tackle the task you give it because this species love to eat, and they prefer to eat compost. They will consume up to half of their weight daily if they have access to food scraps to munch on . Even better , the composting container you will provide for them, one which is designed to be moist and dark for the creatures , will be absolutely worm heaven for them. Basically, they’ll be certain they’ve fallen into the ultimate luxury.

The home you provide for the worms must have a moist bedding made out of biodegradable materials frequently including paper and leaves . The worm’s compost bin will have to incorporate a system for drainage , which might be as simple as holes around the bottom side of the bin , and there must also be air holes . Basically, you’ll want to be certain to there is space within the bedding for air movement . When creating drainage, make sure you have some type of container under the bottom to catch the excess water.

The worms will need to be fed , though they are not like a real household pet which needs a consistent diet. While you shouldn’t leave them with no new food for a month at a time, you won’t be constrained to maintain a consistent feeding schedule. The best kind of food for composting for them has prove to be parings and parts of fruits and vegetables along with coffee grounds.

Bimonthly you’ll see that your composting is creating “pay dirt” . That will be the required period in order for the worms to create workable compost that you can harvest and add to your garden and landscape . If you peek at this point, you’ll find that the worms have created a generously thick layer of crumbly, earthy organic matter . This is a real hit with your plants when you use it to fertilize your your entire landscape .

There’s no one way to perform compost harvesting , but the key is gently remove the organic matter while keeping the worms in the compost bin . A quick search online will indicate several ways . Some will require more work than other times, and some will seem a bit more unpleasant to composters who dislike worms . Just find the method that is best for you. And remember that after a few tries it will all become less stressful and even fun and you’ll be a true pro composter, helping both the environment and your garden .

I just love garlic, and I love the fact that not only does it taste great, but is is so good for you too! Of all the herbs you can learn to grow, this one should definitely have a place in your garden.

Garlic is, of course, a member of the onion family, and thrives in a rich well-drained soil. It actually originated in Central Asia (and not the Mediterranean, surprisingly!) although it will grow very well in the North of Europe. Garlic loves the summer sun.

Garlic is an antiseptic, and will also boost your immune system. If you feel a bit of a cold or flu coming on, it is a great idea to increase your intake of fresh garlic.

As a source for your crop, the easiest is to use last year’s crop, or better still, you may have some unused garlic cloves that are starting to go to seed – excellent. Once you have prepared you soil (more on this later), take the cloves and insert them, pointy end up, into the soil as far as your finger allows. Space them about 9 inches apart. And the bigger the clove you use, the bigger will be the plant it produces. Keep the area weed free and watered.

Once the roots take hold and the tops appear above ground, garlic likes a bit of lower temperature (say 40-60 degrees F). Planting just before winter is best for this very reason, say towards the end of Fall. The colder temperature helps to divide the plant into separate cloves..

Freshly picked garlic has that extra flavor and is a joy to behold. Once you harvest your first produce you will be hooked!
